At Essential Health & Healing Hands, our therapists specialize in helping infants with tongue tie, cheek tie, and lip tie, also known as ankyloglossia. Pre or Post-surgery (Frenectomy). This is diagnosed by a pediatrician, pediatric dentist, or lactation specialist.

A tongue tie occurs when a tight band of tissue, called the frenulum, restricts the movement of the tongue. Without treatment, it can have lasting effects on a child's health, including feeding difficulties, bonding issues, and sleep problems during infancy.  

Cheek tie, also known as buccal frenum restriction, is a condition in which the tissue connecting the cheeks to the gums is too short or tight. It can cause issues with speech development and oral hygiene. Cheek ties can also affect the formation of dimples, increase tension in facial tissue, and cause gum recession in adults. 

Lip tie is a medical condition in infants that occurs when the upper lip's skin is attached to the gums too closely, preventing the lip from moving freely. This can happen when the labial frenulum, the tissue that connects the upper lip to the gum, is too short, thick, or stiff. It can prevent lip movement and make breastfeeding difficult for your baby.

Orofacial exercises (suck training) can help correct or treat breastfeeding difficulties by introducing corrective exercises for the affected muscles.

Infant Cranial Sacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle and noninvasive technique that utilizes light touch to alleviate tension in the tissues surrounding a baby's head, spine, and sacrum. It targets a variety of issues, including head trauma at birth, latching difficulties, fussiness, painful breastfeeding, vomiting/reflux, pain after feeding, misshapen head, and more. Infant Oral Massage is a technique that provides gentle massages specifically designed for infants. We use this technique to treat tongue tie/lip tie/cheek tie. This soothing massage not only helps infants with swallowing and tongue movement but also assists in relieving neck and facial tension. Promoting a balanced head, neck, and body posture improves relaxation and breathing. Our Practitioners will teach you at-home exercises for all ties as well as suck training to aid in a better latching experience for babies and caregivers. An initial visit will be required first.

Our skilled practitioners will demonstrate the stretches you need to perform after your Frenectomy surgery. These significant stretches should begin 24 hours after the surgery and continue at home for 10 to 14 days. We recommend a follow-up appointment after one week. We will provide instructions on performing the stretches at home, just as in the office. Appointment may require an initial intake appointment up to 75 minutes.
